Most of what is advertised as remote is hybrid

This is the first thing worth knowing, because it saves a lot of wasted applications. Irish part time inventory is dominated by retail, hospitality, care, cleaning and warehousing, and none of that can be done from a kitchen table. When a part time advert does say remote, it very often means hybrid: some days at home, some days on site, and therefore still a job you have to be able to travel to.

The two are not the same thing and the difference decides whether the job is possible for you. If you are looking for remote work because you are in Leitrim and the office is in Dublin, a hybrid role is not a remote role. Check the advert rather than the headline, and if it is not stated, ask before the interview rather than after it.

The part time roles that genuinely go remote here

Where remote part time work does exist in Ireland, it clusters in a handful of places:

• Online tutoring and grinds. The most reliable category by some distance, and it fits a part time schedule naturally because it is sold in hour-long blocks. See tutoring and education jobs.
• Phone-based customer service and triage. Contact centre work that moved home during the pandemic and partly stayed there. See customer service jobs.
• Transcription, moderation and data entry. Genuinely remote, genuinely part time, and also the category with the highest concentration of bad actors, so read the next section carefully.
• Bookkeeping and remote admin. Usually needs a qualification or prior experience, but part time hours are common. See office and admin jobs.
• Market research and survey calling. Often evening work, often paid per completed interview rather than hourly, which is worth checking before you agree.

Work from home scams, and how to spot them

This is the part of the job market with the worst ratio of scams to real vacancies. The reason is simple: a scammer who has to run a shop can be found, and a scammer who only has to run a WhatsApp account cannot. These rules are blunt on purpose.

• Never pay to be hired. Not for training, not for equipment, not for a starter kit, not for a background check, not for software. Real employers pay for those. Money moving from you to an employer before your first payslip is the clearest signal there is.
• Never receive and forward parcels. "Package processing" or "reshipping" roles are handling stolen goods. The goods are bought with stolen cards and you are the person whose address is on the trail.
• Never lodge a cheque and send part of it back. The cheque clears, then bounces days later, and the bank takes the full amount back from you. What you wired is gone and it is your money that went.
• No PPS number, bank details or passport scan before a written offer. Payroll details come after you are hired. The same rule as on your CV.
• Be wary of a hiring process conducted entirely by text. An interview that happens only over WhatsApp or Telegram, with no call, no video and no named person, is not a hiring process.
• Pay unhooked from work is not pay. If the advertised money is not tied to hours, output or a rate you can check, then whatever is being sold, it is not a job.
• Look for a real employer. A named company, an address, a phone number, and some existence outside the advert. Vagueness about who you would actually be working for is the common thread through all of the above.

If you meet one of these, report it. In the Republic that means your local Garda station, and in Northern Ireland it means Action Fraud. Reporting is worth the ten minutes even when you have lost nothing, because the next person to see the same advert may not spot it.

Working from home does not change your rights

The minimum wage applies to work done at home exactly as it does to work done on site. So do the rules on breaks, on payslips, and on being paid for the hours you actually work.

Watch for one thing in particular: being described as self-employed or as a contractor when the arrangement is really employment. Whether you are an employee is decided by how the work actually runs, who controls it and who carries the risk, not by the label on the paperwork. It matters because it decides your entitlements.
